Abamectin is a powerful, broad-spectrum insecticide and miticide derived from the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. It is widely used in agriculture, horticulture, and pharmaceuticals to paralyze and kill pests—such as mites, leafminers, and thrips—by disrupting their nervous system.

How It Works

Mode of Action: Abamectin stimulates the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which interrupts nerve signals and causes rapid paralysis and feeding cessation in targeted pests.

Translaminar Movement: When applied as a spray, abamectin penetrates the leaf tissue. This allows it to control pests feeding on the underside of leaves, even if the spray only hits the top surface.
Common Uses

Agricultural & Ornamental: It is heavily relied upon by growers of foliage plants, woody ornamentals, and Christmas trees to control spider mites and leafminers.

Pharmaceutical/Veterinary: A chemically related analog, ivermectin, is used for parasitic infections in humans and animals.
