Moxidectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug (anthelmintic) belonging to the macrocyclic lactone class. In humans, it is a prescription medication used primarily to treat onchocerciasis (river blindness). In veterinary medicine, it is widely used to prevent heartworm and eliminate intestinal parasites.

Human Use

Primary Use: Treats river blindness (onchocerciasis) caused by the roundworm parasite Onchocerca volvulus.

·  Dosage: Available as oral tablets; the standard adult dose is an 8 mg single dose. It can be prescribed to patients 4 years of age and older who weigh at least 13 kg.

·  Side Effects: Common side effects include skin rashes, itching, muscle pain, headache, and a fast heart rate. These symptoms are frequently caused by the body reacting to the death of the parasites.

·  Limitations: It does not kill adult O. volvulus worms, so follow-up medical care is required.

Veterinary Use

Moxidectin is a staple in veterinary care for various animals, including dogs, cats, horses, sheep, and cattle:

Dogs & Cats: Commonly used as a heartworm preventive, often administered topically (e.g., Advantage Multi®) or via extended-release injectables that last six to twelve months (e.g., ProHeart®). It is also combined with other medications (like in Simparica Trio®) to protect against fleas, ticks, and intestinal worms.

Horses: Frequently used in oral gel form to treat large and small strongyles, stomach worms, and bots.

Livestock: Used as an oral drench, injectable, or pour-on treatment to control internal and external parasites in sheep and cattle.
