Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide and medication derived from chrysanthemum flowers. It is widely used to repel and kill insects like mosquitoes, ticks, and lice, as well as to treat scabies in humans.

Insect Repellent and Treatment

How it works: Unlike skin-applied repellents, permethrin is applied directly to clothing, tents, and gear rather than the skin. It paralyzes the insect's central nervous system, causing hyperactivity, knockdown, and death upon contact.

Effectiveness: It remains bonded to fabric fibers and is highly effective at preventing tick and mosquito bites.
Duration: A typical treatment lasts through about 6 washings or up to 6 weeks of sun and air exposure. 

Medical Use

Medication: As a topical cream (usually 5%) or lotion (1%), permethrin is a common, prescription-based or OTC treatment for scabies and crab lice. It works by eradicating the mites and their eggs.
